The Mighty 5: A First-Timer's Guide to Utah's National Parks

Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef — how to see all five of Utah's national parks, when to go, and what not to miss.

A

Utah’s “Mighty 5” national parks pack more red-rock drama into one state than almost anywhere on Earth. Here’s how to plan a trip that hits all five.

The route

The classic loop runs Zion → Bryce Canyon → Capitol Reef → Canyonlands → Arches. Give yourself at least 7–10 days to do it without rushing.

When to go

Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are ideal: smaller crowds and milder temperatures. Summer brings heat and packed lots; winter brings quiet and the occasional dusting of snow on red rock — magical, if you’re prepared.

Don’t miss

  • Zion: The Narrows and Angels Landing (permit required).
  • Bryce: Sunrise at Sunrise Point over the hoodoos.
  • Arches: Delicate Arch at golden hour.
  • Canyonlands: Mesa Arch at dawn.
  • Capitol Reef: The orchards and the scenic drive.
